WELCOME TO 515 EDGECOMBE AVENUE COOPERATIVE

This website was created to make it easy for you to find answers to the most common questions you might have as a resident of 515 Edgecombe Avenue.

SHAREHOLDERS' MEETING

There will be a special shareholders' meeting on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, beginning at 8pm in the building's lobby. If you have items you would like included in the agenda, please send them directly to Elizabeth Castelli.

COOP NEWS New

CheckmarkThere will be a shareholders' meeting in the near future.  We are in the process of confirming a date that will work for Jerry Edelman from the management company, whose presence at the meeting is obviously important.  We will send a message announcing the meeting date/time as soon as we have it confirmed-- we hope to do so within the next day or so.

CheckmarkIf you have particular agenda items for that shareholders' meeting, please forward them directly to Ellizabeth Castelli.who will collate these items and make sure they appear on the agenda for that meeting.

CheckmarkNeighbors on the 5th floor--and some others--experienced leaks and other water damage from recent winter storms.  The board will report at the next meeting about emerging plans to repair the building's roof as well as plans to finance that major capital project.

CheckmarkThe board is in the process of setting up a central e-mail account to which shareholders can address their requests for help when problems arise in the building.  This will create a permanent and centralized record of such requests, and it will help us keep track of responses, patterns of problems in the building, etc.  (Shareholders will be asked to copy any requests that go to the management company to this central e-mail account to which all board members will have regular access.)

CheckmarkThe yearly financial statement from the coop's (new) accountant is officially due on April 15.  The board is working to ensure that we receive this statement in a timely fashion, in advance of our customary May meeting.

CheckmarkThere will be annual board elections held in May, and a notice will be circulated before long, soliciting (self-)nominations.  Please look for this notice and consider running for the board.

CheckmarkIf you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to be in touch.

Communications with Shareholders

We want to establish better, ongoing communication between the board and shareholders. Please contact Elizabeth Castelli (ecastell@barnard.edu) if you have a question or concern. (For emergencies or repairs, please continue to contact the Super and/or the Management company!)

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
515 Edgecombe Avenue ("combe" is derived from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "hill") is located in a neighborhood bathed in history. Just 2 blocks away is the historic Morris-Jumel Mansion, where George Washington made his headquarters in the fall of 1776 during the battle of Harlem Heights. This avenue was also the home address of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Paul Robeson, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Thurgood Marshall.

North of Highbridge park is a woodsy area within which lies a landmark schist rock that pokes through the dirt called Coogan's Bluff. This site formerly overlooked the Polo Grounds, the stadium where the New York Giants played for over 5 decades. It is named after James Coogan, Manhattan Borough President, who sold the land to New York Giants owner John T. Brush, who moved the Giants to the second Polo Grounds in 1891.
